Russian Fire

It started with a drought, which lead slowly to extreme temperatures for Russia and finally news started dribbling through about smog alerts in Moscow from fires surrounding the city. It seemed just like agriculture land that burst into flame, but within a few days 32% of the land was damaged and a fifth of the wheat crop was gone due to the drought.

According to reports on the 28th of July, air pollution rose up by 50% in Moscow. Ten temperature records had already been broken as the country climbed up to 40 degrees Celsius. According to satellite images, 300 “hot spots” were reported on the 29th of July. By the 30th of July over 900 houses in central Russia had been destroyed by the outbreak.

Numbers escalated and soon over 2500 people had been evacuated from their homes in villages and rural areas. The Ministry sent 15 aircrafts and helicopters to help the situation. The army was also deployed to assist the fire fighters. The death toll reached to 30 while a total of 238000 fire fighters, 2000 soldiers and 226 aircrafts fought the fires. On the 31st of July reports came in that a total of 2 million acres had been damaged.

A total of 774 fires covering 128,000 hectares had been registered by Sunday, the Emergency Situations Ministry said on its web site. The area was 7,000 hectares less than Saturday, but the situation was worsened by strong winds reaching 20 meters per second that fueled the fires, the ministry said

Prime Minister, Vladmir Putin, announced that the government would put aside $165 million to help victims of the fire and said that the houses would all be rebuilt by the following winter.  Out of the 83 regions, 18 have been severely affected by the fire outbreaks.

Putin announced that they are in control now of the fires. Even though over 500 fires have started in the last 24 hours, most have already been doused. Emergency officials say the heat and drought are the main causes of the fires, but they also blame human carelessness, and urged people to use extreme caution when walking or driving in the woods or countryside.

Emergencies Minister Sergei Shoigu lashed out at people for creating the conditions for fires with barbecues and camp fires during their weekend leisure activities.
‘People need to understand that they need to understand all the rules if they go into the forest. Our coming week of work depends on how they spent their days off,’ he said in comments broadcast on state television.

Moscow is again shrouded in smoke from peat and forest fires outside the city. Moscow doctors say the elderly and toddlers should wear gauze masks outdoors.

Offers for help are also coming from abroad. Sergei Shamba, prime minister of Georgia’s separatist region of Abkhazia, said Sunday that local Black Sea resorts were ready to offer vacation trips to 1,000 children whose houses were destroyed in the fire, Interfax reported.

Germany has offered to help clean up the destruction caused by wildfires and build temporary housing for those left homeless. Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill ordered all local churches to hold services to pray for rain and urged believers to join in.

In the last two months of the heat outbreak, hundreds of people have drowned trying to escape the heat by going to the beaches which are ill-equipped.

Often overshadowed by the drama of its catastrophic collapse in the November 1917 Revolution, the Imperial Russian Army’s record in 1914-16 included some notable victories. Its human qualities of patriotism and endurance were remarkable, and in 1916 the ‘Brusilov Offensive’ on the South-Western Front outdistanced anything that was being achieved in France. The variety and romance of its uniforms -…
